5th Class – ‘Weather Watch’

Over the past week, our 5th class men have been carrying out a ‘weather watch’. We have really enjoyed working as scientists and meteorologists. Before we could begin with this project, we had to understand how weather equipment was used for measurements. We then built our own anemometers (to measure wind speed), rain gauges (to measure rain) and thermometers (to measure temperature). We went out to different parts of the school yard each day to record our findings, and represented them through graphs and images. It was very exciting and interesting to get the opportunity to work in this way.

Intel Mini-Scientist

We had a fantastic display of Science in the large hall last Thursday (23rd November). Our 5th Class boys have been working really hard over the past number of months to create their projects. We had judges from Intel present during the day, and the winners were announced that evening, following an exhibition for other pupils and parents. We had a great variety of projects on display this year from all areas of Science, including solar powered cars, a rain detecting washing line, hydraulically powered JCB’s, erupting volcanoes and many more. Well done to everybody who made such a fantastic effort and best of luck to our winners in the next stage of the competition.

We were also delighted to welcome our parents in that evening for a showcase. It was here that the Intel judges announced our winners after much deliberation.

We were also delighted to meet Minister Richard Bruton and representatives from Intel at the grand finals, where our project finished in 2nd place.
